Moreover, underlying Zionist thought, preceding and running alongside of it, was the European Jewish intelligentsia’s historic struggle, from the time of the Jewish Enlightenment until the twentieth century, to defend Jewish culture against that of the dominant Christian society through strategies similar to those employed by the colonized intelligentsia of Asia and Africa.
